The VirtualCenter Server

VMware VirtualCenter Management Server brings together multiple ESX hosts and combines their physical resources for the most efficient utilization. Running as a service on Microsoft® Windows 2000, Microsoft® Windows XP Professional and Microsoft® Windows Server 2003, VMware VirtualCenter Management Server stores and organizes data about physical hosts and virtual machines. VirtualCenter Management Server has four key interfaces:

VirtualCenter Management Server is a separately licensed product required for a distributed virtual infrastructure. One instance of the VirtualCenter Management Server is required for each aggregated datacenter environment to manage.

- If you have an environment of many physical ESX servers to be managed by a single instance of VMware VirtualCenter Management Server, you’ll need one license of VCMS, plus licenses for VMware Infrastructure Starter/Standard/Enterprise for each physical server

- If you have two separate datacenters that do not share resources, you’ll need two instances of VMware VirtualCenter Management Server, in addition to VI3 Starter, Standard and Enterprise licenses for each physical server.

Business/Government

VMware Workstation (available for Windows and Linux) is licensed on a per node basis. This means you require a licence for each installation. There is no volume discount programme in place for workstation. Support/maintenance is optional.

VMware GSX Server is available in a 2-CPU licence or unlimited CPU licence. Gold Support Subscription is mandatory.

Education

VMware has a discounted pricing programme in place for qualifying academic institutions for both VMware GSX Server and VMware Workstation.

VMware® Global Support Services offers a suite of proactive, top-quality support packages to meet your business needs. We are committed to delivering enterprise-class, worldwide support with a single objective in mind: your success.

VMware offers three support and subscription programs (Platinum, Gold and Silver) that include VMware support along with periodic fixes and enhancements to our products. These programs are offered on an annual or multi-year subscription basis. You can purchase a level of service that gives you the rights to receive major, minor and maintenance releases. A reduced fee service is also available that includes minor and maintenance releases only (major releases are available for an additional fee).
